Hastings Reads Kick-Off

Thursday, Feb. 4

6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Dakota County Pleasant Hill Library

Enjoy refreshments, prizes, and activities while you learn about Hastings Reads 2010.  Excerpts from the elementary, young-adult, and adult book selections will be read aloud, the three books will be available for purchase and checkout, Garrison Keillor tickets will be available, and information on all of our events will be provided.  This is an event for your entire family.  (Check with your English teacher to see if she/he is offering extra credit!)

Middle School Book Club

Mondays-Thursdays, Feb. 8- 25

All 6th-8th graders from the community are invited to join the Saturday Night Dirt book club.  The book club will meet after school every Monday-Thursday between February 8 and February 25.  Join us for reading, discussions, activities, snacks, and even a visit from the book’s author!  See you in the Raider Reading Room!


Life in Minnesota

Living in Hastings, we have all experienced “Minnesota charm” firsthand.  Share a fun story about living in, moving to, or growing up in Minnesota.  Drop off your story at the Dakota County Pleasant Hill Library or email it to hastingsreads@hotmail.com.  Selected stories will be printed in The Hastings Star Gazette, read on KDWA, and/or displayed at the public library.  (Check with your English teacher to see if she/he is offering extra credit!)

 

Prime Time Players

Saturday, Feb. 13

The Prime Time Players are professional actors who reenact old-time radio programs.  In our high school auditorium, the PrimeTime Players will present several classic radio shows and jingles with unique Minnesota charm!  (Check with your English teacher to see if she/he is offering extra credit!)

Garrison Keillor—Author Visit

Thursday, Feb. 18

Minnesota icon Garrison Keillor, the creator of Lake Wobegon and the voice of “A Prairie Home Companion,” is scheduled to visit Hastings!  In addition to reading from Leaving Home, Keillor will share his Minnesota wit with Hastings residents.  Bring your book for him to autograph!  Tickets are free and can be picked up in quantities of 1-4 at the public library from February 5 until February 12.


Family Book Event

Thursday, Feb. 18 or Friday, Feb. 19

Hastings Area YMCA

(Multipurpose Room)

This event is for families with children in elementary school.  Your children will enjoy participating in activities related to Minnesota and Up North at the Cabin by Marsha Chall, especially since they have the opportunity to meet the author in March.  Choose the night that works best for your family, and bring your young ones to the YMCA.  You do not need to be a member of the YMCA, and no registration is required.

The high school film club is hosting this event for all high school students.  Listen to the high school announcements for more information about this interesting movie based on one of Will Weaver’s short stories.  Snacks will be provided.  You won’t want to miss it!  (Check with your English teacher to see if he/she is offering extra credit.)

Will Weaver—Author Visit

Will Weaver, famed Minnesota author of numerous young-adult and adult books, will spend the day at the middle school, speaking with students about Saturday Night Dirt.  In the evening, he will speak in the middle school auditorium to the community.  Bring one of his books for an autograph!  (Check with your English teacher to see if she/he is offering extra credit!)

A Hotdish Competition

Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church

The authors of Growing up Lutheran, Suzann Nelson and Hastings’ Janet Martin, are “Those Lutheran Ladies.”  Together they will provide humor for all members of the community, Lutheran or not.  They will also join several Hastings celebrities as judges in our Hotdish Competition between local businesses.  Come for an evening of laughs!  (Check with your English teacher to see if she/he is offering extra credit!)

High school students are invited to the media center after school to discuss Will Weaver’s Saturday Night Dirt.  Start reading the book today. The variety of compelling characters will make for an interesting discussion.  (Check with your English teacher to see if she/he is offering extra credit!)

Local Lutheran pastor and Keillor fan, Doug Duin, will facilitate a discussion about Garrison Keillor’s book, Leaving Home.  Begin reading the book today; you’ll find joy in Keillor’s humorous yet poignant stories about Lake Wobegon and its residents.  (Check with your English teacher to see if she/he is offering extra credit!)

Marsha Chall—Author Visit

Marsha Wilson Chall, award-winning author of six picture books, will visit the public library to talk to children and adults about Up North at the Cabin.  Her beautiful book engages the imagination of her readers and captures the charm of Minnesota’s summers.  Bring a book for her to sign, or purchase one at the event.
